Megan tells me to take the rest of the weekend to cool down. She promises that she’s got it—she’ll figure out exactly what’s going on and hold whoever spread our secret accountable.

But when I step back into the office on Monday morning, the energy is still frantic. Damage control seems to permeate every department of Sound Connections. Already my phone has blown up with notifications—statements saying that the claims are “obviously false,” without much evidence beside the staged photos of Thalia and I. The whole thing nearly pushes me over the edge into a sickening mix of fury and humiliation.

But I handle it how I would any other problem—by shutting myself in my office and ignoring it in favor of trying to do something actually productive. I spend the morning focusing on the donations, doling out what money will go toward instruments, what might be beneficial for bus trips around the state for competitions. It’s easy to lose myself in my work, and I find myself ignoring many of the knocks on my door, preferring to stay cut off from whatever mess is happening past my office. This whole thing was Megan’s idea anyway—why should I have to clean up a mess that I didn’t want to be a part of in the first place?

My mind drifts, thinking back to the night after the benefit. My hands remember Thalia—her smooth curves, her warm mouth against mine, full lips kissing back with desperation. I’ve never been with a person who made me feel like that, so full of fire and desire and emotions that I had never been able to put words to in the past.

Finally, as the afternoon rolls around and I’ve had about five cups of coffee, Megan opens my office door without knocking. Thalia is standing beside her, face carved out of stone, completely cold. I feel hurt and angry for a moment, and then I force myself to clear my mind. To cut off the feelings. To remember that this woman might have pulled me into her, but she was ready to throw me under the bus the whole time.

“We’re coming in,” Megan says bluntly, before I can deny her. She slips in and shuts the door behind her and Thalia. “We need to talk, Alec.”

“About what?” I say coldly. “I thought we already spoke about this.”

“About the two of you,” Megan bites back. “I know you’re not happy, and I apologize for the mess.” She sits in one of the chairs across from me and gestures to Thalia to sit in the other one. When Thalia finally does, Megan leans back and crosses her arms over her chest. “Yes, it’s a disaster. Yes, we had to do major damage control. But downloads for Sound Connections are at record highs. And once this whole thing passes, people will forget all about the negatives and will only remember your name.”

I scoff. “I find that hard to believe.”

Thalia is silent. Her eyes look red around the edges but her mouth is set in a hard, unfeeling line.
